Themes for Lost Caverns of Ixalan

Lost Caverns of Ixalan brings us back to Ixalan; a plane designed around Mesoamerican cultures such as the Maya, Inca, Olmec, and Aztec. In addition to these indigenous-inspired themes, Ixalan is home to rampaging dinosaurs, conquering vampires, pillaging pirates, and river-bound merfolk.

As we explore newly rediscovered caverns on Ixalan, our story takes a Journey to the Center of the Earth twist! What lies at the heart of Ixalan’s hollow core? Which faction will reach it first? And will the reawakened gods of ancient Ixalan thwart our adventurous quest?

Only you can answer these questions at Lost Caverns of Ixalan Prerelease!

Returning Mechanics

  • If a creature you control explores, you reveal the top card of your library. If it’s a land card put it into your hand. Otherwise, you can leave it on top or put it in the graveyard and put a +1/+1 counter on the creature that explored.

  • Creature Type Matters in Ixalan! Your vampires, dinosaurs, merfolk, and pirates work together with other creatures of their same types to become stronger.

New Mechanics

  • Descend cares about how many permanent cards are in your graveyard. Remember, permanents are cards that can sit on the battlefield (such as creatures, lands, enchantments, artifacts, planeswalkers, etc.). Instants and Sorceries, for example, are NOT permanents and so are not counted by Descend.

  • Craft allows you to flip a double-faced card over by paying its Craft cost. Typically, this involves exiling another card that is either in play or in your graveyard in addition to paying the cost. For example, Braided Net wants you to exile an artifact you control or an artifact card from your graveyard in addition to paying the Craft cost. In exchange, it flips over into Braided Quipu.

  • Discover works similarly to the old mechanic Cascade. To Discover 5, for example, you would exile cards from the top of your library until you hit a non-land card with mana value 5 or less. You may cast that card for free or put it into your hand. Then put whatever cards you exiled in this process to the bottom of your deck in a random order.

  • Map Tokens are a new token type in the same vein as Clues, Food, and Treasure. Map Tokens are artifacts with “{1}, {T}, Sacrifice this artifact: Target creature you control explores. Activate only as a sorcery.”
